Robot Graveyard - Unity
For this group project, my same cohort  from the Alien World project was tasked with creating a 3D world that could be explored and interacted with in Unity.
After much discussion we finally settled on the idea of creating a graveyard for out-of-date robots in a technologically advanced world. The graveyard is littered with a variety of robots and trash varying from futuristic to retro. A key aspect of the graveyard is the factory that is creating new robots by parts from the graveyard. There is also futuristic city off in the distance but still ever-present.
When creating models for this project I wanted to create a wide variety of robots. One of the first robot ideas that came to mind was an Iron Giant inspired robot that was so large it almost looked like it was keeping watch over the graveyard. Some of my other robots were more original, where I would focus on one key aspect of the robot and then base the rest of the model around that. All of the robots were a lot of fun to model as I was able to create what came to mind with no reference needed. It was also interesting seeing my style peek through as I started to notice recurring aspects.
Everyone helped create assets for the world, varying from original 3D models to Frankensteined photogrammetry models to create wholly unique assets. Knowing we all had different styles, one thing we did that helped make our entire world feel more cohesive is that we textured everything in unity and limited ourselves to only a handful of textures. So a lot of textures are actually reused amongst different models.
This was our entire cohorts first time doing anything in Unity, so there was definitely a learning curve. To make the project more do-able, we assigned roles to each person. My role was Lead Interaction Designer. So I was in charge of placing all of the final models and of all of the animations and interactions that users would experience within the world. This meant I had to delve head first into Unity and all of the in game physics and systems.
We were ultimately very satisfied with our final project as we created a believable and cohesive world. You can explore the world yourself by downloading the file below!
